Travel company Omega Breaks is currently offering aerial excursions to see the world’s most impressive light show — also known as the Aurora Borealis — led by an expert astronomer. This year, the trip has Pete Lawrence on board, one of BBC’s legendary Sky at Night presenters.

Before the flight, there’ll be two presentations at the airport to explain what to look forward to on the journey and how to spot the Northern Lights from your plane seat.

Once in the sky, all you need to do is sit back, relax, and take in the phenomenon from your window. Phones at the ready, the tour promises everything from shooting stars and the Milky Way to iconic constellations and Orion’s Belt with guided commentary from the expert astronomy team.

Now, we know what you’re thinking, everyone will be fighting for that window seat. But to keep things fair, passengers are asked to rotate seats in their row of three, to make sure everyone gets a good look in. After the once-in-a-lifetime experience, drinks and light refreshments will be served on the way home whilst you get those Insta Stories ready to go.

If you’ve ever booked a trip to Iceland and been left disappointed, Omega Breaks emphasises that this flight will increase your chances of seeing the Northern Lights. Pollution, bad weather conditions, and overcast clouds can hamper the experience at ground level. But with this trip, you’ll fly high above any potential problems.

What are the Northern Lights?

The Northern Lights are formally known as Aurora Borealis. It's essentially a technicolour light display in the sky with impressive swirls of light. Colours can range from purple and red to green. The Northern Lights are caused by charged particles from the sun colliding with gases in the earth’s atmosphere.

According to the BBC, we saw more Northern Lights in 2024 than ever before and can expect to see the natural display more often than usual until 2026. And as luck would have it, September to November is allegedly the best time of year to see them. Talk about timing!

What does the Northern Lights trip include?

  • Exclusive pre-flight presentations and in-flight commentary from expert astronomers
  • Approximate three-hour excursion depending on departure location
  • Light drinks and refreshments on board
  • All airport taxes

How much does the Northern Lights trip cost?

The Northern Lights excursion costs from £249 per person depending on the date and where you fly from and is available to book through the Omega website. The trip departs from Manchester, Birmingham, and London Gatwick. See you there?
